Effects of mandatory iodization on the iodine content of retailer and household salt in South Africa

چکیده

Voluntary iodization of table salt prior to 1995 had a beneficial effect on the prevalence of goitre in some areas in South Africa. However, it was, due to limited availability and unequal access, unsuccessful in eradicating iodine deficiency and endemic goitre. Against this background the international focus on the eradication of IDD stimulated the introduction of mandatory iodization of table salt in South Africa at the end of 1995 at a higher iodine concentration than before. Within one year the availability of iodized salt at the retail level increased considerably and the iodine content of iodized salt more than doubled from 14 to 33 ppm, accompanied by considerable variation in the iodine concentration. In a national study more than 2 years after the introduction of mandatory iodization the mean iodine concentration of household salt was 27 ppm and the median 30 ppm, and 62.4% of households used adequately iodized salt. These improvements, both at the retail and household level, in the iodine content and coverage of iodized salt after the introduction of mandatory iodization could be further enhanced by eliminating the factors responsible for the use of inadequately iodized salt, with a particular focus on low socio-economic households. Descriptors: iodine deficiency, mandatory salt iodization, retail salt, household salt.

Short-term effectiveness of mandatory iodization of table salt, at an elevated iodine concentration, on the iodine and goiter status of schoolchildren with endemic goiter.

BACKGROUND Goiter rates and iodine deficiency usually show marked improvement in efficacy studies of mandatory iodization of salt, but little is known about the short-term effectiveness of mandatory iodization. OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to evaluate, after 1 y, the effectiveness of mandatory iodization of salt at an iodine concentration higher than that occurring under optional iodiza...

Breast-Milk Iodine Concentrations, Iodine Status, and Thyroid Function of Breastfed Infants Aged 2-4 Months and Their Mothers Residing in a South African Township

OBJECTIVE Lactating women and their infants are susceptible to iodine deficiency and iodine excess. In South Africa, no data exist on the iodine status and thyroid function of these vulnerable groups. METHODS In a cross-sectional study, urinary iodine concentrations (UIC), thyroid function, and breast-milk iodine concentrations (BMIC) were assessed in 100 lactating women from a South African ...

A lowered salt intake does not compromise iodine status in South Africa, a country with mandatory salt iodization

Objective: Universal salt iodization is an effective strategy to optimize population-level iodine. At the same time as salt-lowering initiatives are encouraged globally, there is concern about compromised iodine intakes. This study investigated whether salt intakes at recommended levels resulted in a suboptimal iodine status in a country where salt is the vehicle for iodine fortification. Metho...

Prevalence of endemic goiter and urinary iodine in 6-11 year old students in Yazd province: 10 years after salt iodization programme

Introduction: Iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) are among the most important epidemic disorders in the world and also in our country. The surveillance of IDD may be implemented to assess the prevalence of IDD, identify high risk areas for intervention and monitor and evaluate IDD control programmes, such as salt iodization. The objective of this study was to determine total goiter rate (TGR) an...

Iodine concentration in household salt in South Africa.

OBJECTIVE To determine the iodine concentration in household salt, the coverage of adequately iodized salt, the use of non-iodized agricultural and producers' salt, and the usefulness of salt as a carrier of iodine, and to relate these observations to socioeconomic status in South Africa. METHOD The iodometric titration method was used to analyse 2043 household salt samples collected using a ...
